Lily's Version of Yard Work

Greg and I have done a lot of work in the yard this summer, and since Lily loves it outside, she happily oversees all of it! We've had really mild weather, and it's been nice for walks, gardening and just being outdoors. We're preparing a garden for the fall and will hopefully be able to get some of Lily's food from it!

How am I supposed to work on my tan under this thing?

Working hard.

Boomer loved laying in the tree stump mulch.

Hey, you might want to move that plant to the left a little bit.

Lily working on her own project.

After all that work outside, it's time to play with my stuffed animals.

I love her giggle - and those legs!

Of course amidst all the toys, she finds a tag.

Oh my - so many toys, so many decisions...

Help me I've fallen, and I can't get up!

So happy.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

We took the architectural boat tour which we've been on before, but it had been quite a few years ago (and we weren't with Lily of course!) It's such a neat way to see the city and learn about the history of Chicago. We took a bunch of pictures, but I'll just post a few here.

Love and Marriage...

This isn't really a blog about love and marriage - but that's what we always call the fountain in Grant Park based on the beginning credits of the Married with Children show. Pictures of that below...

Anyway, back to the adventures in Chicago! The wedding was on a Friday so we stayed the weekend with the Hellyer's and took the train into Chicago on Saturday and drove downtown again on Sunday. On Saturday while we waited for the train into the city, we happened to be a block from a really fun parade so the kids enjoyed watching all the people marching by and playing music. When we got into town, we headed to the Taste of Chicago and walked all around the city.

A funny highlight occurred when (after a full day in the city) we realized the train left downtown at 4:30 but then not again until 6:30. We intended to take the 4:30 train back to our hotel, but totally lost track of time until it was about 4:15. We were a pretty good distance away from the train station, but we gave it a go and ran from Grant Park and huffed it uptown (in the rain at that point). We ended up missing the train in the end but had some good laughs as we were running with 2 kids and 2 strollers. I'm sure Peyton and Lily enjoyed the ride. It all worked out since we just got dinner and took our time until the 6:30 train back. The kids did so amazingly well (after having been out the whole day - and only taking brief naps in the stroller). We even took them to the hotel pool when we got back. Kids are troopers!!

The view is great from up here!

Contemplative Lily...

Peyton lookin' good!

I love trains!!

I can hold the umbrella too, ya know.

"Hey Lily, how 'bout we ditch our parents and take a drive..."

"Ok, if you don't want to drive, I'll make a go of it..."

Every Precious Minute

I count my blessings every day and thank God for all the good (and bad) in my life. Life has so many peaks and valleys and I'm a strong believer that the bad times everyone must go through are what make the good ones so great...right!?

I follow a few blogs - most are friends of mine that are in pretty much the same stage of life. There's one I read from time to time by a guy named Matt who has a daughter named Madeline. He lost his wife shortly after she gave birth to their only daughter. He blogs about his day-to-day adventures of raising his little Madeline while working and struggling with the loss of his wife. His blog can be poignant, crass at times, tender and downright hilarious when he describes the joys and craziness of raising a 1 year old.

In one of his recent posts he links to a song and a blog he read that really touched him. It happened to be about another couple that went through a loss, not of a spouse, but of their child. I found myself listening to the song while reading the post and crying my eyes out. Raising a child can be the most exhilarating, hair pulling out, crazy amazing, most wonderful thing in the world - but I can't imagine doing it without Greg. And now that she's here, I can't imagine life without Lily. I know bad things happen to good people and you figure out a way to get through it, but some things just don't seem fair. God has a plan, but it doesn't always make sense to us. One thing I know for sure is that life is fleeting and you've got to savor the moments you have with your family and friends. Our life is so good and we are truly blessed - and I realize that this post may seem a bit sad, but I just don't think there can ever be too many reminders to tell the ones you love just how much they mean to you.

Here's the link to Matt's post and the song: http://www.mattlogelin.com/archives/2009/07/08/time-and-a-song/

And the blog entry that Matt read that was so touching:
~~
I would give anything if I could have just one more minute…”

The above is something the bereaved often say. Personally, I have always found it to be a silly statement…after all, what good is a minute? Three of them pass in a commercial break, sixty in an hour, nearly fifteen hundred in a day. A minute is so fleeting, in fact, that forty-two million of them expire before a person reaches their eightieth birthday. Clearly, a minute is nothing special.

“I would give anything if I could have just one more minute…”

What a silly thing to say.

At least that’s what I used to think. Today I realize that, as quickly as a minute may pass, it can be the most valuable thing in the world.

Lately I have begun to fantasize about what it would be like to have one more minute with Madeline. In my fantasy I imagine Heather and myself sitting on our couches as we do so much lately, absent-mindedly staring at our computer screens, when all of a sudden a few notes echo from Maddie’s long silent little red piano. I look up and see Maddie pressing the keys as she flashes that brilliant smile of hers at me. Heather and I look at each other in disbelief, then throw our computers aside, leap to our feet, and wrap Maddie up in our arms. As we cover her little face in kisses Maddie giggles and says “Wow” in her sweet little voice. Tears soon stream down our faces as Heather and I kiss our baby all over…on her tiny hands, her cute belly, her pudgy little legs…and run our hands through her curly hair. Finally, as the minute winds down to its final seconds, we tell her that we love her and kiss her one last time before she is gone once again.

As silly as it may sound, I would give anything…absolutely anything…to have that minute.
~~
So on that note - tell your partner, children, parents, friends, heck...tell your neighbor just how much they mean to you.

Silly Lily

Well, we're back from the beach! It was Lily's first trip to the ocean and we had a great time. I have a slight backlog of pictures and posts to catch up on, but they're coming!

In the meantime, here's a funny video of Lily trying to "scare" dad. Each night we'd sit on the beach chairs in the sand and give her a bottle before bedtime. Usually it coincided with a gorgeous sunset and it was just awesome. Anyway, back to the video - Lily loves making loud noises or kicks her feet to get our attention. We pretend that we're not looking and then when she makes her noises and we react, she cracks up. Too funny!

Adventures in Chicago!

We traveled to Chicago for Katie & JB's wedding and had such a fun time. We caravaned with Jimmy, Julie & Peyton and even got adjoining rooms (great idea so Lily & PeyPey could play...and so Julie and I could hang out when we left the reception to put the kids to sleep!)
It was such a nice wedding and we decided to stay and make a weekend out of it. More pictures to come, but here are the wedding pics first...
I love the "big people" bed!

Is it time to go to the wedding yet!?
I guess it's wedding time!? Ready to get dressed!

I love my dad.

JB is going to love that I put this one on here...
